Senior citizen bus service to make debut

FREEHOLD — Senior citizens in Freehold Borough will have access to a new bus that will take them to and from shopping trips, medical appointments and other destinations now that an agreement has been crafted between the borough and the Senior Citizens Housing Corporation of the Borough of Freehold (Hudson Manor).

Borough Council President Sharon Shutzer thanked the directors of Hudson Manor, which is an apartment building for senior citizens, for partnering with the borough in an endeavor to benefit the community’s older residents.

A council resolution states that Freehold Borough and the Senior Citizens Housing Corporation will provide transportation services to senior citizens and disabled citizens in town.

Shutzer said the Senior Citizens Housing Corporation purchased the bus and will hire a driver, pay his salary, coordinate transportation services and arrange schedules. The borough will maintain the bus and provide insurance and fuel.

The new bus will be available to all senior citizens in the community. It is expected to take people to “local banks, hairdressers, barber shops, doctors, drug stores, treatments or tests at CentraState Medical Center, food and other shopping, nutrition programs and any other activity necessary or desirable for the health and well being of the seniors and the disabled.”

The Senior Citizens Housing Corporation will be responsible for making arrangements for a substitute driver and will designate a transportation coordinator and supervise all employees involved with the transportation program.

It will also be responsible for verifying the appropriate licensure of drivers, according to the resolution. The borough will be provided with a list of drivers.

The bus will be accessible to individuals with disabilities and seat 20 passengers, or 16 passengers and two wheelchair positions. The new bus is anticipated to be available on Oct 31. The bus service will be free to all Freehold Borough residents age 62 and over. Disabled Freehold Borough residents of all ages may use the bus.

On Monday and Thursday, the bus will go to ShopRite, Freehold Township; on alternating Tuesdays, the bus will go to Foodtown, Freehold Borough, or Stop and Shop, Freehold Township; on Wednesday, the bus will go to Wegmans, Manalapan; on Friday, the bus will go to the Jackson Premium Outlets, Delicious Orchards, the Freehold Raceway Mall, and other destinations.

The bus will transport people to medical appointments, a hospital, a beauty parlor, etc., anywhere within a 5-mile radius of Hudson Manor.

Individuals must call 24 hours ahead to notify Hudson Manor officials that they will be taking the bus for any reason. Call 732- 431-4880 or 732-431-7599. The bus will not have stops around town unless it is picking up an individual in the borough. Bus hours are 8:15 a.m. to 3:45 pm.
