History of Deep Cut Gardens In 1935, Vito Genovese bought the property that is now Deep Cut Gardens as a retreat for his family from New York City. He developed the estate to be reminiscent of his Italian homeland; the peanut stone walls, cascading pools, pergola and parterre were all added under his tenure. In1937 Genovese left the country and shortly after, the house burned to the ground. The most recent owners Marjorie and Karl Wihtol, bought the property in 1952 and built home that is now the Horticultural Center. In 1977, Mrs. Wihtol bequeathed 20 acres of property to the park system, which purchased another 20 acres with Green Acres funding. Deep Cut was opened to the public in 1978, and another 14 acres was added in 1990. Park hours:
The park is open 8 a.m. to dusk, yearround. Admission and parking are free. |
