Gallene, O’Neill win historic swim titles

     The fastest high school swimmer in New Jersey attends Freehold High School in Freehold Borough. That is not a misprint. Joe Gallene earned the title of “Fastest Swimmer in the State” by winning the 50- yard freestyle race at the NJSIAA Individual Swimming Championships held on March 7 at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology, Sewell.

Howard’s number to be retired
     Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard, the first member of the Lakewood BlueClaws ever to play in the Major Leagues, will return to Lakewood on Sept. 2 to have his uniform number 29 retired by the team.

O’Dowd earns indoor All-America recognition

     Mike O’Dowd lost track of what place he was in during the 5,000- meter run at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships on March 12. That was easy to do considering the race was 25 laps and in a crowded field, runners could not tell if they were lapping other runners at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory in New York City.

     The March 6 NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV state sectional tournament semifinal game between the Marlboro and North Brunswick boys basketball teams became a classic. The two teams were bidding to be this year’s Cinderella squad in the state sectional bracket, and they gave a full house of fans at Marlboro High School what they came to see: great high school basketball.

     Now the entire country knows about Robby Andrews’ finishing speed. Andrews, a University of Virginia freshman, stunned everyone, including himself, by winning the 800-meter run at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.

Lancers win state title; TOC next for SJV girls

     It is March, which in high school girls basketball means it is St. John Vianney High School time. No program in the state has mastered state championship basketball like the Lancers. Last week the Lancers won the NJSIAA Non-Public South A and Non-Public A state titles for the 14th time each and advanced to the Tournament of Champions (TOC), where they are the defending champions.

      Kristina Danella, a sophomore guard from Manalapan, led the University of Massachusetts basketball team in scoring this winter. Danella averaged 11.9 points per game for the Minutewomen, who were 11-18 during the regular season and qualified for the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament.
