Marlboro will reapply for grant

MARLBORO — After the state cancelled a grant from 2000 that would have brought improvements to a portion of School Road East, the Marlboro Township Council has authorized a new grant proposal to be submitted for the project.

In 2000, Marlboro was the recipient of a New Jersey Department of Transportation Trust Municipal Aid Program grant in the amount of $150,000 for improvements on School Road East.

According to the council’s resolution reapplying for the grant, from the time of the state’s approval of the grant, Marlboro officials had one year to award a construction contract for the School Road East project.

The resolution notes there have been several time extensions granted for the project.

In 2009, municipal officials authorized CME Associates to provide professional engineering and survey services for the preparation of contract documents, plans and specifications for the road improvement project

As soon as those services were rendered by CME Associates, Marlboro officials were notified that the DOT had cancelled the 2000 grant funding, the resolution states.

The proposed road improvements would include the portion of School Road East between Hudson Street and Buckley Road, about a quarter-mile.

The project would include the widening and defining of the existing intersection at School Road East and Hudson Street to improve traffic patterns. School Road East would be resurfaced between Hudson Street and Buckley Road.

Following the DOT’s cancellation of the $150,000 grant, the council authorized the administration to reapply for the funds. That action was taken during the council’s Feb. 4 meeting.

The grant will be sought through the 2010 Local Aid Infrastructure Fund from the DOT.
