Gala of Hope will help fight cancer

Ten years ago a group of Monmouth County women connected by the bonds of friendship and a shared cause came together to organize a fundraiser to fight cancer and support the needs of local cancer patients.

Through their hard work, dedication and creativity, the first Gala of Hope benefiting the American Cancer Society’s Jersey Shore region was held. In its inaugural year, the gala raised $70,000. A decade later, the committee is still thriving and the event has grown more successful each year, according to a press release.

Over the past 10 years, the Gala of Hope has raised close to $1.8 million. This year the committee has set a lofty goal and hopes to bring the total money raised to $2 million. More than 200 tickets to this year’s event have already been sold.

The Gala of Hope volunteer committee and the Jersey Shore Region of the American Cancer Society will host the 10th annual Gala of Hope on March 13 at the Mill in Spring Lake Heights.

The theme of this year’s volunteer-driven event is “Hot Havana Nights.” The cocktail party will include a silent auction, a live auction, casino-style gaming, and a 50/50 raffle, all set in a hip nightclub-style atmosphere. The evening will also feature a special guest appearance by Nikki and John of Unique Music. They have been featured on the popular TV dance program, “So You Think You Can Dance” and in music videos.

The Gala of Hope committee will recognize Lianne Brock, of Marlboro, as this year’s honorary chair of the event. For the past four years Brock has spearheaded a successful fundraising effort on behalf of the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, and has served as an advocate for the event each year, according to the press release.

Funds raised by the event will help to support American Cancer Society research, as well as cancer education, advocacy and patient services programs in Monmouth and Ocean counties. Opportunities to support the event are still available. For tickets, sponsorship opportunities or additional information, contact the American Cancer Society at 1- 800-ACS-2345.
