Sport Shorts National Girls and Women in Sports Day, sponsored by University Orthopaedic Associates (UOA) and in partnership with Rider and Rutgers universities, will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Feb 14 at Rider University’s Student Recreation Center in Lawrenceville. The free clinic, open to girls ages 5-17, will offer interactive sports clinics led by Riders coaches and players. Concurrent breakout sessions for parents and siblings will be presented by UOA sports medicine specialists and collegiate trainers, each tailored to the female athlete. Several local champions from the 2010 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship that was held at St. Veronica’s School, Howell, have earned the right to advance to the district-level competition. Named as champs were Madison Gibson, Howell, and Anthony Bove, Freehold (10-year-old bracket); Maureen Coakley and Zachary Barnes, both of Howell (11-year-old bracket); Zachary Barnes, Howell, (12-year-old bracket); Grace Groh, Howell (13-year-old bracket); and Samantha Stazko and David Furbish, both of Jackson (14-year-old bracket). Area residents age 60 and older have an opportunity to join the Lakewood BlueClaws Silver Sluggers Club program in 2010. For $9.95, members get an official hat, a membership card, one ticket per member to two Tuesday games (nine games in total to choose from), and a 20 percent discount at the ClawsCove on Tuesday nights. The Rotary Clubs of Monmouth County, along with the Center for Vocational Rehabilitation, will honor 27 of Monmouth County’s outstanding high school football linemen at the 38th annual Vince Lombardi awards banquet to be held Feb. 25 at the Sheraton Hotel, Eatontown. The players selected, one from each high school, have met criteria that best exemplify the traditions and ideals of Vince Lombardi. In judging those eligible, the coaches and their staff considered discipline, courage, endurance, desire, ability and performance. The honorees will receive the “Block of Granite” trophy that symbolizes the 1936 Fordham University football team’s Seven Blocks of Granite. Vince Lombardi played right guard on that offensive line. Among the winners of the 2010 Vince Lombardi Outstanding Lineman award are: Kevin Weissman of Colts Neck High School, Ryan Solley of Freehold High School, Vincent DeMarinis of Freehold Township High School, Rob Sabbagh of Howell High School, Johnny Dokouslis of Manalapan High School and Sean Manzi of Marlboro High School. Sarra Moller of Manalapan has signed a contract to play women’s professional soccer for Kvarnsvedens IK in Sweden. Moller, who starred for Loyola University in Baltimore, is the first Loyola player to play professionally overseas. She played her high school soccer at St. John Vianney High School, Holmdel. At Loyola, Moller was a two-time Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year. She was All-MAAC First Team for four consecutive years and was named to the All-Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team in 2008 and Third Team in 2005. That team is picked by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. During her four years with the Greyhounds, the team was 29-1-6 in conference regular-season play. Off the field, Moller won Loyola’s Ernest Lagna Award for excellence in academics, athletics and community service. After graduating from Loyola in 2008, Moller served as an assistant coach in 2009. The Greyhounds were 15-5-3 and won the MAAC regular-season and tournament titles and qualified for the NCAA College Cup for the seventh time in school history. Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Monmouth County, Marlboro, will hold a Presidents Day Indoor Soccer Clinic on Feb. 15. The clinic, run in conjunction with the Jewish Community Center of Western Monmouth County, will be held at the Solomon Schechter Day School, 22 School Road East, Marlboro, and is for students in grades K-5. There will be two sessions, both led by Spencer of Rovers International Soccer. Session I is from 9:30- 10:30 a.m. and Session II is from 11 a.m. to noon. The cost is $18 for each session. The Marlboro Renegades, a 14-U and 15-U travel baseball team that plays in the central New Jersey area, is looking for quality pitchers and catchers. The program will run from April to the beginning of June and is open to boys and girls in second through eighth grade. The fee is $75 for Howell residents and $85 for nonresidents. Toms River’s own world top-ranked fighter and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) title contender Frankie Edgar will headline the Allies Inc. fundraiser on Feb. 28 at 4 p.m. at KatManDu in Trenton. Also appearing at the event will be pitching legend Roger Clemens. With a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) record of 11-1, Edgar has become one of the world’s elite fighters in the world’s toughest league. In April, Edgar will get a title shot when he fights longtime belt-holder B.J. Penn in the Lightweight (155-pound) division. Clemens played for the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, Houston Astros and New York Yankees, where he won two World Series titles. Ticket prices are as follows: Adults age 18 and over, $25 each.
