Officers square off in hoop challenge

MARLBORO — Representatives of the Marlboro Police Department and the Manalapan Police Department will face off on the court during a charity basketball game on Presidents Day, Feb. 15.

The charity game between members of the two local police departments will raise funds for the Police Unity Tour and is a part of a fun-filled day being planned at Kelvin’s Basketball Academy, Amboy Road, Marlboro.

The Police Unity Tour is a four-day bicycle ride whose primary purpose is to raise awareness of officers who have died in the line of duty. The riders will travel by bicycle to Washington, D.C.

Each participant is expected to raise a minimum of $1,700, according to the Police Unity Tour Internet website.

From 1-2 p.m. Feb. 15, officers from the Manalapan and Marlboro police departments will square off on the basketball court. There will be halftime foul shooting contests for prizes.

Before the men in blue face off on the court, Kelvin’s Basketball Academy will host a skills challenge from 9 a.m. to noon.

Youngsters are invited to come test their skills at the iHoops Skills Challenge, a free national skills competition.

Boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 14 are invited to participate. The top performers will earn a chance to win a free trip to Orlando, Fla., to compete in the national finals in May.

Following the basketball game involving the police officers, Kelvin’s Basketball Academy will open its courts for free play from 3-4 p.m. Throughout the day anyone may make a donation to the Police Unity Tour. For more information call 732-536- 5222.
