      Marlboro H.S. junior wins second straight first singles crown
            Michelle Dassa was quite miffed when the seedings for the Monmouth County tennis tournament were announced. The defending champion from Marlboro High School found herself inexplicably unseeded. "Just like last year," she said. "It made me more determined. I was a little shocked" at being unseeded.

            Former teammates and rivals are distinguishing themselves at the major college level in women's cross country competition. Ashley Higginson and Allison Linnell, who were teammates at Colts Neck High School, and former Jackson Memorial High School standout Amanda Marino are competing for three of the best teams in the United States.

      Rebels will open bid for CJ IV sectional title
            Keep the train rolling. That is what Howell High School assistant football coach Mike Verrochi kept shouting every time the Rebels picked up a first down and marched down the field. There was plenty of rolling on Nov. 6 as the Rebels, behind quarterback Jimmy Ryan's four touchdown passes, beat Southern Regional High School, 37-19, in Howell.

      Area man competed in 1970, and once again this year
            Ralph Garfield and his 127 compatriots had no idea what they were starting. It was 1970 and the first New York City Marathon was being run. Garfield, who was living in the city at the time, decided on a whim to give the 26.2- mile race a try. At that time runners and Central Park were strangers.

            The Freehold Township High School field hockey team is not settling for just being good. Now that the Patriots have become an established winning program, Coach Beth English wants her team to strive for more.             It took 15:50 for all of Mike O'Dowd's off-season miles, dedication and sacrifices to pay off. That is how long it took the Colts Neck High School harrier to run around the Thompson Park 5K layout in Jamesburg, Middlesex County, on Nov. 7 to win the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV cross country championship.
