      Howell High School girls second in team standings
            The 2009 Shore Conference Cross Country Championships proved to be a confidence booster for Freehold Regional High School District harriers. With the state sectional meet looming, the Oct. 31 conference meet at Bucks Mill Park, Colts Neck, gave runners one final tune-up against significant competition before starting their run to the NJSIAA Meet of Champions.

            Joe Parella is the face of junior college soccer, according to Brookdale Community College coach Mike Costa. Although he was overshadowed at Howell High School, Parella had a chance to shine at Brookdale and he took advantage of the opportunity.

      Two late goals help Marlboro sink CBA in soccer tournament
            Be patient. That was the advice that Marlboro High School boys soccer coach Dave Santos kept giving his players during the Oct. 31 Shore Conference Tournament championship match in Neptune. Although Marlboro was trailing Christian Brothers Academy late in the match, Santos wanted his Mustangs to play their game.

      Weather playing havoc with fall fishing action
      Fish On •
            It was another tough week. Rain and stiff winds kept most anglers at the dock. Those who toughed it out were able to get a few keepers. This week in Barnegat Light, stripers continued to dominate when the fish and the weather cooperated. Capt. Steve Purul from Reel Fantasea Charters, Barnegat, was greeted by stiff northeast winds keeping them in the bay/inlet area.

      Cougars win A North with perfect league mark
      Colts Neck now setting sights on state sectional crown
            Their Shore Conference A North Division rivals made life more difficult for the Colts Neck High School girls volleyball team this fall, even though a look at the final standings would not suggest that. Once again, Coach Glenn Jansen's Cougars stood alone atop the A North division with a perfect 14-0 mark. Runner-up Howell was 11-3.

      Colonials earn top seed for field hockey tourney
            The road to the NJSIAA North Jersey Section II, Group III state sectional title runs through Freehold Borough. Coach Jerrilynn Acevedo's Freehold High School Colonials earned the No. 1 seed for the state sectional tournament and the home field advantage that goes with it.

      Sayreville drops Howell from undefeated ranks
            Abattle of undefeated high school football teams lived up to its hype on Oct. 30. The gridiron squads from Sayreville War Memorial and Howell high schools entered the contest in Sayreville with the No. 1 seed in the upcoming NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV state playoffs on the line.

      Colts Neck hoping for long run in state play
            With the state sectional tournament to look forward to, the Colts Neck High School boys soccer team's loss to Marlboro in the Shore Conference Tournament did not close the 2009 campaign. But the prospect of playing in the state tournament this week did not make last week's loss to the Mustangs any easier for Art Collier's club.
