      Braves retire Gray's No. 14
            When Chris Gray was the quarterback of the Manalapan High School football team, the Braves weren't very good. His strong arm was the only show in town then. Yet it didn't prevent him from remaining positive and passing that on to his teammates. He was the team captain his senior year.

            They were fit to be tied a year ago. The Marlboro and Freehold Township high school girls tennis teams shared the Shore Conference A North Division title in 2008, and it looks like they are in for a seasonlong battle for A North Division supremacy.

      FT boys win; district meet tomorrow
            Mike O'Dowd made another case for himself as the sleeper to be on the watch for. The Colts Neck junior won the Boys Championship race at the New Balance Jersey Shore Cougar Invitational held on his home cross country course, Bucks Mill Park, on Saturday.

            Important division contests will highlight this weekend's high school football schedule. Both Howell (3-0) and Freehold Borough (2-1) high schools are playing away games. Howell travels to Toms River High School North (2-0) on Saturday night (6 p.m.) in a battle of undefeated Shore American Division foes.

            Howell's Anthony Gallicchio, 11, played on the USA Junior Olympic inline roller hockey team that won the silver medal at the AAU Junior Olympic Games in Feasteville, Pa. Gallicchio, a forward, was the leading goal-scorer for Team USA with 16. He also had four assists for 20 points, which ranked fifth overall among all age groups. He is ranked No.
