      Neptune gridders edge Freehold in overtime
            Somebody had to win. That sums up Neptune High School's 26-20 overtime victory over Freehold High School on Sept. 17 in Neptune. It was a football game which both teams did their best to win and to lose. With each team losing five fumbles and the Colonials intercepting two passes, the teams combined for 12 turnovers.

      Cougars top Perth Amboy
            The Colts Neck High School football team scored its first win for new head coach Greg LaCava on Sept. 17 with a 7-0 victory over visiting Perth Amboy High School of Middlesex County. A tough defense made Joe Iacono's 41- yard touchdown run in the third quarter stand up. Colts Neck improved to 1-1. The Cougars lost their season opener to Brick Township High School, 18-3.

      A North soccer teams expect a good battle
            While the Freehold High School girls soccer team has been the Freehold Regional High School District's marquee program in recent years, the district's boys soccer teams have spread the wealth around. Three different teams from the FRHSD have won the Shore Conference Tournament title over the last three years.

            Brandon Brown made a spectacular collegiate debut for ASA College, Brooklyn, N.Y. The former Freehold High School football standout scored four touchdowns as the Avengers, playing the first game in school history, defeated Milford Academy in a shootout, 56-43. Brown scored on touchdown receptions of 75, 15 and 15 yards and returned a punt 65 yards for another TD.

      Gymnastics talent led by Howell H.S.
            It would be unfair to expect Freehold Regional High School District gymnasts to match their accomplishments of 2008. Last year was as good as it gets, with Howell High School's Austyn Fobes winning the state all-around title.

      Cougar Invitational has top cross country talent
            Race director Jim Schlentz has put together another outstanding field for the Sept. 26 New Balance Cougar Invitational Cross Country Meet. The event will be held on Colts Neck High School's 3.1-mile home course at Bucks Mill Park. Start time is 9 a.m.

      Marlboro harriers score big win in Ocean County
            They were small but important steps for the Marlboro High School boys cross country team. At the Jersey Shore Cross Country Classic, hosted by Monsignor Donovan High School at the Robert Miller Airport in Bayville, Ocean County, on Sept. 11, the Mustangs experienced their first success in seven years.
