      Mediate, Gulbis sign on to headline Golf Classic
            Called the most highly anticipated charitable golf and entertainment event in central New Jersey, the Sovereign Bank Charity Golf Classic returns on Oct. 5- 6. The event, held at Forsgate Country Club, Monroe Township, raises funds for the nonprofit Forsgate Foundation, which supports causes throughout New Jersey.

      Big plays spark Colonials' victory in opener
            Scoring 20 points in the first quarter of the first game of 2009 removed any lingering doubts that the Freehold High School football team might suffer from a championship season hangover. The Colonials, last year's NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III champions, proved that the big play is still part of their arsenal in a 34-10 thumping of New Brunswick High School on Sept.

            Two soccer teams that are looking to go places in 2009 are on the campus of Brookdale Community College, Lincroft. Mike Costa's men's team is coming off the finest season in school history (17-1-3).

      Flounder season concludes
            The New Jersey summer flounder season was officially closed as of Sept. 4. New Jersey recreational anglers' harvest of summer flounder (fluke) was the current 18-inch minimum size and six fish possession limit.

      Plainfield Curling Club to host open house Oct. 3
            Anyone who has ever wanted to try a sport that has been featured during coverage of the last two Winter Olympics will have that opportunity on Oct. 3 from 2-6 p.m. when New Jersey's only dedicated curling facility hosts an open house.

            Freehold High School has carried the banner for field hockey in the Freehold Regional High School District in recent years. Coach Jerrilynn Acevedo's Colonials have emerged as one of the Shore Conference's top programs during that time span.

      Vintage Master joins greats with Cane win
            In a vintage performance worthy of the great champions of the past, Vintage Master won the 55th Cane Pace on Labor Day, Sept. 7, at Freehold Raceway. In joining such greats as Bret Hanover, Albatross and Niatross, who are all previous winners of the Cane Pace, Vintage Master was masterful.

      CJ Hawks repeat as champions
            The Central Jersey Hawks enjoyed another banner AAU basketball season. The 10-U girls team made up of players from the area captured its second straight New Jersey AAU State Championship. The Hawks defeated the Shore Shots in the final.

      Rebels impressive in season opener
            The last time the Howell High School football team played at Rutgers Stadium in Piscataway, in 2007, the Rebels won a state gridiron championship. Although the stakes were not as high on the morning of Sept. 13, the 2009 Rebels left the Rutgers Stadium turf with an impressive 26-14 victory over state power Piscataway High School in their season opener.
