      Football season kicks off with high hopes
            Coach Mark Cicctotelli's Freehold High School Colonials gave the 2008 scholastic football season its signature event. The Colonials won their first playoff state championship when they defeated Middletown South, 21-14, to claim the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III crown. It capped an 11-1 campaign for Freehold.

      Patriots' season rests on ability to 'deliver'
            The Freehold Township High School football team has adopted "Deliver" as its motto for the 2009 season. In recent seasons, including 2008, the Patriots had 4-6 seasons that could easily have been 6-4 or 7-3 campaigns. Last year the Patriots lost three games to state playoff teams by a touchdown or less.

            Coach Mark Ciccotelli has a simple warning for his 2009 Freehold High School Colonials: Don't look back. Ciccotelli is well aware of the dangers his football players will face this fall if their focus is on what they did last year — win a state championship — and not on 2009.

      Braves have high hopes for 2009 grid campaign
            You can be young and inexperienced, or you can be young and inexperienced with a lot of potential. Manalapan High School football coach Tom Gallahue sees his Braves as the latter. With just three senior starters returning from last fall's 5-5 campaign, Manalapan is going to be very young in 2009. However, to Gallahue, that is not necessarily a drawback.

      Colts Neck seeks return to grid playoffs
            The 2009 season will be a transition year for the Colts Neck High School football program. Mike McArthur, the only coach the Cougars have ever had, has stepped down, and Greg LaCava, an assistant coach on McArthur's staff last year, is the new head coach.

            With 105 players coming out for the 2009 season, Howell High School football coach Cory Davies has what every coach likes: depth. As the Rebels look to rebound from a 3-7 season that came one year after they won the 2007 NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV state title, all the pieces are there.

      Sports Shorts
            Manalapan Fusion, a U-16 travel baseball team, is looking for players to round out its roster. Players born between May 1, 1992, and April 30, 1993, are eligible. The Fusion are looking for pitchers and catchers in particular. Playing for the Fusion requires an 11-month commitment.

            An attitude change remains Derek Sininsky's biggest concern at Marlboro High School. Now in his second year at the helm of the Mustangs' football program, Sininsky is still working to change the negative environment that has enveloped the Marlboro gridiron program for so long.
