      Brett Brach did not land the summer job he expected, but he is not complaining. Brach, who led the Monmouth University baseball team to the 2009 Northeast Conference championship and a trip to the NCAA tournament as the Hawks' No. 1 starter, had planned to find a local job this summer and pitch wherever and whenever he could.

Cougars' Kuzma powers All-FRHSD softball team

      Kate Kuzma and the Colts Neck High School Cougars carried the day in girls softball during the 2009 season in the Freehold Regional High School District. Kuzma, who is heading to Monmouth University, was one of the most feared hitters in the Shore Conference, with a .500 batting average and a 1.067 slugging percentage.

Pellegrino wins Sheehan Classic

      Apair of former high school champions who are now training partners took over the roads in Red Bank at the George Sheehan Classic on June 6. Marlboro High School graduate Nick Pellegrino, who starred at Monmouth University, won the 5-mile race around Red Bank in a time of 24:58.55.

Patriots' trio tops boys lacrosse team
      Freehold Township High School's march to the 2009 Shore Conference A North Division public schools championship highlighted another banner year for boys lacrosse in the Freehold Regional High School District. Powered by the line of Mike Mango, Adam Miller and John Talamo, the Patriots lost only to nonpublic Christian Brothers Academy in division play.

St. Rose boys win volleyball crown

      With talent deep enough to field two teams, the St. Rose of Lima School in Freehold Borough won the Monmouth-Ocean Volleyball League championship. The Jaguars beat All Saints of Manahawkin in straight sets. St. Rose, which also won the league's regular season championship, finished the 2009 season with an 11-1 record.
