      Patriots top CBA to win Monmouth crown
            As he paced back and forth in the dugout, Freehold Township High School baseball coach Frank Gualtieri remarked, "They're letting us hang around." "They" were mighty Christian Brothers Academy. The Colts carried at 23-2 record and two one-side victories over the Patriots into the May 30 championship game of the Monmouth County Tournament.

      Braves' essays win new football cleats
            The Manalapan High School football team will have new Nike cleats for the 2009 season. That will be the Braves' prize after being selected as the overall winner in an essay contest promoted by Donald Brown. Brown is a former Red Bank Catholic High School standout who went on to an outstanding college football career at the University of Connecticut.

      Unachukwu, Andrews win state Group titles
            Ada Unachukwu would not have looked at her high school track and field career any differently had she not won a state championship, but she will not have to think about that void now that she has won a New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association state Group IV championship.

            Freehold's Alyssa Mayrose, a sophomore at Fairleigh Dickinson University, was named the women's basketball team's Most Valuable Player for the 2008-09 season. The award was voted on by the players. Mayrose, a graduate of Freehold High School, Freehold Borough, averaged 12.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game for the Knights and was second on the team in assists (79).

      Schonholtz follows brother, wins district golf title
            Before he teed off in the 2009 Freehold Regional High School District golf tournament, Andrew Schonholtz received a phone call from his brother, Jason. "He told me, 'I won it; you have to win it,' " said Andrew. Jason Schonholtz enjoyed a productive career at Colts Neck High School, playing on some outstanding teams and putting up solid scores in tournaments.

      Cougars keeping raising the bar in girls lacrosse
            This year's Colts Neck High School girls lacrosse team did not want to drop the ball. The Cougars made program history in 2008 by forging their first winning season (10-9) and qualifying for the state tournament for the first time in school history.

      Fluke starting to bite
            Fluke fishing in the Garden State is in full swing. Hundreds of boats covered the tip of Sandy Hook this week drifting for enough keepers to make a dinner. Water temperatures in the bay reached 63 degrees and this should turn on some good summer fluke action in the coming weeks.
