Softball team off to Minnesota for national championships

      When a game is decided by which team plays winning softball, it is a safe bet that team will be Brookdale Community College. In a title game that featured two of the top eight teams in the United States, it was Coach Bo Scannapieco's Brookdale Jersey Blues who made the winning plays in a 6-2 victory over Northampton Community College, Bethlehem, Pa.

The Colts Neck High School girls golf team had every reason to believe the 2009 season would be an outstanding one. The Cougars were coming off a solid 2008 season and 2009 got off to a promising start. The Cougars were 2-0 in match play and playing well as a team.

Blewett wins again at Wall
      Jimmy Blewett of Howell is as hot as a firecracker at Wall Stadium. His most recent streak started last November when he won the tour type Modified stock car portion of the annual Turkey Derby at the Wall Township oval. His good fortune continued on April 18, when he topped the grand reopening 100- lap main event for the Modified stock cars.

Sport Shorts
      Freehold Regional Middle School hockey tryouts will be held on May 20 starting at 7:45 p.m. at the Gold Coast Arena (formerly Wall Sports Arena), Wall Township. The tryouts are open to players in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades who live in Colts Neck, Freehold Borough, Freehold Township, Howell, Manalapan and Marlboro. Goalies are needed. The cost is $25 per player.

RBC knocks Patriots out of lacrosse tourney

      It was an all-too-familiar sight to Nikki Hastings: her Freehold Township High School field hockey team was falling behind Red Bank Catholic High School in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Shore Conference Tournament. The Caseys had stopped the Patriots in this round of the conference tournament in the previous two years by building up a big lead in the first half.

College baseball comes to Lakewood
      LAKEWOOD — The Lakewood Blue- Claws, along with Kean University, will host the 2009 Mid-Atlantic Regional of the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship at FirstEnergy Park from May 13-17. Games will be played beginning at 10 a.m. each day, leading up to the regional final at noon May 17.
