      I would like to commend the Freehold Borough Board of Education for their preparation of a lean, yet responsible budget in these uncertain economic times. It appears that a majority of the board truly understands the importance to the town in providing a cost-effective, yet thorough and efficient education.

Monmouth County sheriff's officers are definitely first responders
      I must express my disgust at Monmouth County officials' claim that the Monmouth County sheriff's officers are not "first responders." This claim surfaced because Sheriff Kim Guadagno instructed her staff to explore applying for a federal grant that would save the jobs of 14 sheriff's officers facing layoffs.

Writer says students did not deserve to be criticized
      I find it truly amazing that a member of our community has chosen to criticize and denigrate the scientific work and research of an obviously talented group of Manalapan High School Science and Engineering students and their work on a cure for AIDS ("Students Should Have Looked at Other Side of AIDS Issue," News Transcript, Letters to the Editor, April 22, 2009).

      Government could do more to be fair to senior citizens. While Covered Bridge is an affordable place to live, it would be even more affordable if these changes were made: Utilities: Sewer rates are the same for every household served by the Western Monmouth Utilities Authority (WMUA), regardless of usage.

      How can our Township Committee members in Freehold Township receive any pay while allowing our public safety to be put in jeopardy? At the public meeting on April 28 a police officer asked the committee members to forgo their salaries to avoid possible police layoffs.

Board president appreciates voters' support for budget
      On behalf of the Freehold Township Board of Education, I would like to thank the voters of our district for their support in passing the school budget. This was a community-wide effort and included parents and staff. The board has always tried to provide an outstanding education for our children, while maintaining fiscal responsibility to its taxpayers.
