School supt. appreciates foundation's efforts Nine years ago, a group of Marlboro residents interested in developing an alternative source of funding for the K-8 public schools created the Marlboro Educational Foundation. The organization's mission was to support educational opportunities through innovative programs not covered in the regular school budget. To date, the foundation has been able to achieve its vision to benefit our children. Over the past nine years, the Marlboro K-8 School District, through the tireless efforts and hard work of foundation members, has been the recipient of almost $300,000, all of which has been used to provide grants to teachers that provide our children with outstanding programs that they would otherwise not have experienced. The fundraisers developed by the foundation are successful on two levels. First, and most basic, the events raise the dollars necessary to support the teacher grant program. Second, and no less important, the fundraisers provide participants with a very enjoyable way to spend some time with family and friends, while at the same time supporting the K-8 public schools. The upcoming fourth annual Restaurant Tasting, scheduled for May 4 at The Excelsior from 6-10 p.m., is a prime example of a funfilled evening that has attracted almost 600 people every year. Attendees have the opportunity to enjoy delicious, beautifully prepared foods and desserts from dozens of restaurants, as well as sample a variety of wines and liquors. The event includes a raffle and professionally run silent auction with items such as framed art, sports memorabilia, and more. Back by popular demand, "Principal for the Day" will be included in this year's auction along with the newest item, "Marlboro Mayor for a Day." Due to the outstanding fundraising efforts of the foundation last year, the school district received a record 57 grants totaling almost $50,000 that was dispersed in the 2008-09 school year. The majority of these funds were raised at the annual Restaurant Tasting. I encourage you to attend this event at The Excelsior on May 4. You are guaranteed to have a wonderful time while, at the same time, supporting our children's education. Tickets are $50 ($60 at the door) for adults and $25 ($30 at the door) for children under 16 years of age.
