      Cougars seeking state basketball supremacy
            Four down and one to go. When the Colts Neck High School girls basketball team won the Central Jersey Group IV state sectional championship on March 10, the Cougars pointed out that they needed five more wins to achieve their season's goal: winning the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions title.

      Robinson helps to set records at Fairfield
            Manalapan's Andrew Robinson, a freshman at Fairfield (Conn.) University, has made a big splash in his first collegiate swimming season. He has been a part of seven school records.       Sire Stakes purses bumped to $3.5M
            The Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association of New Jersey has successfully negotiated a $400,000 purse enhancement for the 2009 New Jersey Sire Stakes events at the Meadowlands. The additional funding will be applied to the preliminary legs of the New Jersey Sire Stakes.

      Rebels proud of first-year success
      Howell ice hockey team won 19 games, captured two titles
            There were no regrets on the Howell High School ice hockey team after its extraordinary 2008-09 inaugural season came to an end. It had been more successful than any of the Rebels could have ever imagined when they first put their skates on for tryouts back in November.

            Manalapan Youth wrestlers Logan Waller, Christian Isabella, Christopher Maksimik and Joe Mendez were crowned Mid-Jersey League champions at their respective weight classes for 2009. In all, 15 Manalapan Mat Rats earned medals at the season-ending tournament.

      Gallene, O'Neill make FHS swimming history
            The Freehold High School swim team reached new heights this year. At the Monmouth County Championships, Joe Gallene became the first Colonials swimmer to win a county championship when he captured the 50-yard freestyle.

      Howell's Ramos tops C Division all-stars
            High-scoring forward Dave Ramos of Howell High School tops the Shore Coaches All-C Division First Team Ice Hockey Team. Ramos, who scored 97 points for the Rebels during the 2008-09 hockey season, was named the Shore Conference C Division's Most Valuable Player. His linemate Marc Moskowitz, who scored 85 points, joined him on the First Team.

            Coach John Gagliano's Howell High School Rebels remained the measuring stick for area wrestling teams in the 2008-09 season.

      MEMS ends perfect season
            Perfection. The Manalapan Englishtown Middle School seventh grade girls basketball team achieved that elusive prize this winter. The Lady Bears finished the 2008-09 season with a 15-0 record. They completed their perfect season with a 24-14 victory over the Wall Middle School to win the Monmouth County Middle School championship.

            Ashley Forsyth tossed a no-hitter and won two games to lead Seton Hall University's softball team to the championship at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County Dawg Pound Classic. Forsyth is a junior at Seton Hall and is a graduate of Freehold High School, Freehold Borough.
