Writer has great pride in, respect for fire dept.

I read with interest and dismay the article wherein Gina Ramos blames the Freehold Fire Department for her daughter's death ("Mom, Fire Department at Odds Over Response," News Transcript, Feb. 18). I do want to let her know that she and her family are in my prayers and I cannot imagine losing a child.

For those who read the article and do not know anyone on the department, I felt I must respond. As the granddaughter and daughter of men who were members of this department for more than 50 years, I beg to differ with Mrs. Ramos' allegations against the members of the department.

First of all, these men are volunteers who give their time, energy and dedication to protect the quality of life, health, safety and welfare of the residents of Freehold Borough. I know one of the members who was on the ladder, he is a cousin of mine; they could not get in because furniture was against the window.

Do you think the men do not think about the loss of life when it happens? Do you think they do not give 100 percent at each fire? If so, you are wrong. They go through extensive training through various fire academies.

Mrs. Ramos, I do not want to seem coldhearted, but if you have a bedroom in an attic you need to make sure there are smoke detectors, ways to escape (ladder to climb down), have an escape plan in place. Make sure your children all get out of the house, take them by the hands.

The members of the fire department are third-, fourth-, sometimes fifth-generation members. Growing up I knew that these men would go into a fire to rescue others without thought for themselves. We, their families, have lost and could have lost our family members who were volunteers.

You need to stop bashing the department and thank them for doing their job. It is not their fault that furniture was blocking the window. I want to let these brave men know how much I love, respect and honor not only them, but the memory of those who have passed that so bravely and gallantly served and continue to serve Freehold Borough.
