      Howell Rebels capture District 21 crown
      Grapplers end team reign of Jackson Memorial
            The Howell High School wrestling team turned disappointment into triumph on Saturday. Reeling from a pair of team tournament losses (to Brick Memorial in the Shore Conference Tournament and to Hunterdon Central in the NJISAA Central Jersey Group IV tournament), Coach John Gagliano reminded his wrestlers that all was not lost.

      Ramos leads Howell to first playoff win Colonials advance to SCT semifinals
            Playoff hockey. The Howell High School Rebels got their first taste of postseason play in the opening round of the Shore Conference Dowd Cup and they made the most of the opportunity. Riding a four-goal outburst by Dave Ramos and the solid goaltending of Zachary Peras, Howell beat Rumson-Fair Haven, 5-2, on Feb.

            No one can question the resolve of the Freehold High School boys basketball team. That resolve is the reason why the Colonials are playing No. 1 seed Christian Brothers Academy in tonight's Shore Conference Tournament semifinals in the Ritacco Center on the campus of Toms River North High School at 6 p.m.

            Ryan Spadola doesn't go much for moral victories. "I don't like to lose," Spadola said after finishing third in the 400-meter dash at Saturday's NJSIAA Indoor Track and Field Meet of Champions held at the John Bennett Indoor Athletic Complex in Toms River.

      Brookdale women seek Region XIX crown
            The Brookdale Community College women's basketball team will begin its "real" season this weekend. The Jersey Blues will be looking to make their fourth trip in five years to the National Junior College Athletic Association national championships. They will start that journey to the nationals at the Region XIX Tournament being hosted by the County College of Morris.

            Manalapan's Matt Lauletti is competing for the Muhlenburg College track and field team. The sophomore started his indoor season on a strong note by finishing third in the 3,000-meter run at Kutztown University. He ran the mile at the Susquehanna Orange and Maroon Classic, finishing seventh. He ran the 800 meters at the Muhlenberg Invitational, placing fourth.
