Friday, the Brave senior faced his biggest athletic test in the Boys High School Mile at the prestigious Millrose Games in New York City's Madison Square Garden.       Over the summer, Marlboro's E.J. Tucker was attending college combines. He had no particular college in mind. He just wanted to catch the eye of college football coaches. In July, he went to the combine that the U.S. Military Academy was conducting in West Point, N.Y., and everything changed. He had unexpectedly found his college.

Colts Neck cagers in playoff hunt

The Cougars, after all, had graduated the Shore Conference's best player (point guard Mitchell Kates, winner of the Kerwin Award) and leading scorer (Steve Spinella) plus number of important role-players from a 19-win team.

Unachukwu wins two, Patriot boys are first
At County Indoor Championships

      Marlboro's Ada Unachukwu continued her mastery of the Shore area sprinters at Friday's Monmouth County Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Mustangs senior won the 400. Unachukwu, who won the Shore Conference 55-meter dash the previous weekend, duplicated that victory Friday at the John Bennett Indoor Athletic Complex in Toms River.

Howell basketball making progress
State playoffs within reach

      One of the nicest stories to come out of the 2008-09 boys basketball season has been the sudden rise of Brian Quick's Howell High School Rebels. With back-to-back wins on Friday and Saturday over Colts Neck (53-45) and Keansburg (61-31), Howell is 9-9 and enters play this week with the opportunity to make the state playoffs.

Freehold Raceway purses cut

      A25 percent cut in purses at Freehold Raceway is hurting local standardbred owners and trainers whose livelihood depends on racing. The Freehold racetrack's parent company, Pennwood Racing, has so far refused to accept more than $1.6 million in supplementary purse money that New Jersey horsemen helped garner for the track last year.
