Volunteers deserve the sincere thanks of their community
Astaggering fact released this week by the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics gnawed at my cheerful nature and exposed my existential angst. It was that 61 million people volunteered through or for an organization between September 2006 and September 2007.

Soccer tournament was a healing event for community
Early in 2008 our community lost two young lives, Graeme Preston and Kevin Clawson, due to injuries they received after being struck by an automobile. Knowing he was an experienced cyclist and had brand new headlights and tail lights on his bicycle, I had no problem with that. If I had only known that he would not make it back safely.

Children are the real victims of a failing economy
As the economy continues to take its toll on families across the country, we have heard lots of talk about big banks and major automakers. There was concern for how shrinking resources would affect merchants who relied on the holiday shopping frenzy.
