      Sports Shorts
            Freehold Borough Little League will hold registration for the 2009 season on Friday (7-9 p.m.) and Saturday (9 a.m.-noon) at the American Legion Hall. Eligible players must be residents of Freehold Borough between the ages 5-16 as of April 30. Fees range from $80- $115 depending on the age group. There will also be a $100 refundable service fee collected.

            Being the first is special. Being the first team to win a championship is irreplaceable. This winter, the Howell High School ice hockey team had the distinction of not only being the first in school history, but the first one to bring home a championship.

      Pats keep winning thanks to defense
      FT girls are 7-3 at midway point of season
            As much as John Sciarappa may like an up-tempo basketball, defense has always come first. It's the reason Freehold Township's veteran head coach has been one of the most consistent winning coaches in the Shore. It's also the reason his Patriots are among the top 10 teams in the Shore again with a 7-3 overall record as the season reaches the halfway point.

      Marlboro's Goldfarb excels in fencing
            It's a sport that requires speed and quickness, stamina and mental toughness. And, dedication. Yet, it is a sport unfamiliar to most. The same attributes that make for an outstanding athlete in any of the varsity sports offered in the Freehold Regional District are what have made Marlboro's Brian Goldfarb a nationally ranked fencer.

      Colonials, Pats led field hockey teams
            The two Freeholds, Borough and Township, were field hockey in 2008. Both were ranked among the 10 best in the Shore Conference. Jerry Acevedo's Colonials (16-4) followed up their state sectional championship season of 2007 with another successful season proving that they are one of the conference's most consistent programs.

      Middle school hockey team is flourishing
      Squad plays in Bridgewater
            Ice hockey has filtered down to the middle school level thanks to Manalapan's Scott Friedman. Combining the middle schools in the Freehold area, the independent Freehold Regional Red Wings Middle School Hockey Club is competing in the Central Jersey Middle School Hockey League.
