            There are no moral victories if you have the talent and aspirations of the Colts Neck girls basketball team. The Cougars got so solace from playing nationally ranked (14th) University High School of Newark tough, before falling 75- 68 at Monmouth University at the Showcase Tournaments' Champions Challenge.

      Sports Shorts
            Former Red Bank Regional star Rob Dennis won the first round of the Freehold Area Running Club's Winter Race Series. Dennis won the 5K race held inside Michael Tighe Park in Freehold Township on Jan. 4. He clocked 16:44, finishing just two seconds ahead of Freehold's Pedro Espinosa (16:46). Third place went to Clay Rotas (17:50).

      Brave cagers have things turned around
      Manalapan girls won Winter Wave Tournament
            With a 5-2 overall record and a tournament championship, the Manalapan High School girls basketball team hardly resembles the squad that won just two games last winter. The program that had fallen on vary hard times is on the rebound. What pleases head coach Scott Horton the most about Manalapan's great start is that the Braves have done it all by themselves.

            The Merli Invitational was just a warmup. Jan. 2 at the Shore Conference A North Division Indoor Track and Field Championships, Freehold Township unleashed its sprinting prowess, first displayed at the Merli, and then by capturing the A North Division title at the John Bennett Indoor Complex in Toms River.
