      Colonials state title tops grid season
            From the opening kickoff to the final play of the season, Freehold Borough football had the town abuzz. The Borough knew it had something special, and Mark Ciccotelli's Colonials delivered, winning the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III state sectional title. They topped Middletown South 21-14 in the Dec. 6 state final played at Rutgers Stadium.

      CN's Slugh signs with Hofstra softball
            Colts Neck's D.J. Slugh was in softball purgatory. Not only had she torn her ACL last winter, losing her junior season at Colts Neck, she thought she had lost much more. Four days before suffering her seasonending injury at an indoor showcase, she had made a verbal commitment to Hofstra University, Long Island, N.Y.

            Marlboro High School's Chelsea Unger has signed her national letter of intent to join the Marist University women's swimming team. Marist coach Larry Van- Wagner said that the Marlboro senior is one of the two fastest breaststrokers ever recruited by the Red Foxes.

      Rebels' Sullivano wins 200 at Spiked Shoe
            What promises to be a very busy and highly productive indoor track and field season began with the Merli Invitational. Held inside the Toms River Bubble, which will host most of the major events in the state, on Dec. 20, the Merli signaled the start of the season.
