      Tyson's journey concludes with state championship
            Nick Tyson and his brother, Noel Kavanagh, found quiet and solace on the 50-yard line at Rutgers Stadium. While the Freehold Borough football team was celebrating its first state playoff championship, the brothers took time to reflect on the unlikely journey their family had taken in the last year.

            Loch Haven (Pa.) University freshman Lindsey Lambert earned All-Region honors at the recent NCAA Division II East Region Cross Country Championships held in Slippery Rock, Pa. Lambert finished eighth in her region debut, touring the 6K course in 22:33.

      Fobes, Ecklof top gymnastics team
            The 2008 gymnastics season can be summed up in two words, Howell and Fobes. Jenn Hier's Rebels reach new heights this fall capturing the NJSIAA Central Jersey Section I title. It was one of three titles won by Howell. The Rebels won the Shore Conference A North Division title for the third consecutive year.

      2008 All-Freehold Regional District Girls Tennis Team
            Singles- Michelle Dassa, Sophomore, Marlboro. Monmouth County First Singles champion. Bianca Petcu, Freshman, Freehold Township. Helped the Patriots share the A North title with Marlboro. Ashley Klein, Freshman, Manalapan. Along with Petcu, top impact freshman in District.

      Freehold Soccer League has two State Cup champions
            After waiting 25 years for another State Cup champion, the Freehold Soccer League doubled its pleasure. This fall, two traveling teams from the club, the Lady Strikers (U-14 girls) and the Phantoms (U-11 boys), captured State Cup titles. The Strikers will play in the Region I (which includes states from Maine to Virginia) championships in July in West Virginia.

      Freehold PeeWee Gold win Eastern Region title
            Atouchdown-saving shoestring tackle. A goal-line stand. A clutch third-andlong touchdown conversion. All of these went into the Freehold Pop Warner's PeeWee Gold's thrilling triumph at the Eastern Region South Division III championship game played Nov. 23 at Rumson-Fair Haven High School.

      Andrews commits to U. of Virginia
            This year's prized college recruit, Manalapan's Robby Andrews, is going to be communing with Thomas Jefferson. And he'll be furthering his running career with one of the country's top young coaches, Jason Vigilante, at the University of Virginia.

      Sports Shorts
            Matt Higgins, a sophomore from Freehold, is guard/forward swing player on the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team. Expected to play a bigger role this winter, Higgins has been doing just that. He is averaging 13.4 points and leads the team in rebounding at 7.6 a game.
