Pantry director sees rise in needy families

The number of families seeking assistance from the Howell food pantry is rising, according to Eileen Lukenda, the director of the pantry.

Lukenda said there are about 10 new families each month who are coming to the food pantry for help. She said the food pantry, which has been in existence since 1987, currently serves 100 families in Howell.

She said the food pantry's mission to provide needy families with groceries is in jeopardy because of low inventory.

Donations of nonperishable items such as canned soups, canned vegetables, canned fruit, peanut butter, tuna fish and macaroni and cheese are being sought now. Volunteers are needed to help stock the shelves and to distribute food.

Food is usually distributed on the last Monday of every month. The Howell food pantry is at 450 Adelphia Road (Route 524). For more information call 732-938-2368.
