      One can't help thinking that the Freehold Borough football team has to win the Shore Conference Federal Division championship twice. In the sectional semifinal on Nov. 22, the Colonial defeated Neptune for the second time this year in a defensive struggle, 14-0. The Scarlet Fliers just happen to play in the Federal Division.

Andrews fifth at cross-country MOC
Brave dips under 16:00

      His final race at Holmdel Park went close to what Robby Andrews wanted. The Manalapan senior was not able to win the NJSIAA Meet of Champions cross country title on Nov. 22, but he did break the benchmark 16:00, and his fifth-place finish gave him back-to-back top-five finishes at the season's biggest race (he was fourth in 2007).

      The Manalapan Heat, 11U travel baseball team, won the fall USABL Central Division championship. The Heat beat the Toms River Raiders, 6-0, the previously undefeated Old Bridge Patriots, 10-6, and the Manchester Blue Claws, 14-0, in the playoffs.

Gallo, Trotter one-two at Born to Run race
      Lindsey Gallo and Amanda Trotter had a lot of catching up to do. The one-time high school rivals ran Friday's Born to Run 5-Mile Run together. Gallo, who went to Howell, and Trotter, to Red Bank Regional, were both state champions during their scholastic careers and then went on to bigger things in college, Gallo at Michigan and Trotter at Stanford.

      The NJSIAA Group III state championship match between Freehold Borough and Ramapo was about more than a game. Win or lose, an era was ending on the College of New Jersey pitch in Ewing Township.

      The seeds of Freehold Borough's downfall were planted ironically in Alexandra Eagle's ice-breaking goal. With less than two minutes remaining in a scoreless first half of the Nov. 22 NJSIAA Group III State Championship match at the College of New Jersey between the defending champion Colonials and Ramapo, the Colonials positioned themselves for Eagle's corner kick.
