            How do you define greatness? Is it measured by talent, heart, desire, and the will to win? You can debate which one of these the Freehold Borough girls soccer team has the most of, but you can't debate that they certainly have all of the above and more.

      Before winning state x-c title
            Sunday's Group IV state championship cross country race was unfolding like all the previous ones for Manalapan's Robby Andrews. He was settled in the lead pack biding his time before he would strike late in the race. Everyone was running for second.

      Colonials prevail in state playoffs
      Freehold Boro tops Nottingham
            The Freehold Borough High School football team learned its lesson. After winning the Shore Conference Federal Division last year, the Colonials were a satisfied team and lost in the first round of the state playoffs.

      PeeWee Gold to play for Region title
            It's on to the Pop Warner Division III Eastern Regional championship game for the Freehold PeeWee Gold Giants. The Gold team will be playing the Carolina Cougars from Maryland on Sunday at noon on Toms River North High School's field.

      Record season for FT field hockey
            After the team's groundbreaking season, Beth English reminded her Freehold Township field hockey team there was more to play for. "I told them to 'finish what you started,' " she said. The Patriots were putting together the best season in school history, and she didn't want it to end in the first round of the state playoffs.

      Blues continue to rule down the shore
            Hungry schools of blues from 5 to 15 pounds are dominating the shoreline. Despite some wet weather, find the birds and jig away. Anglers from Point Pleasant all the way to Long Beach Island are chasing the birds and pounding away at hungry blues and the occasional striped bass. Blues blitzed the beaches for as far as the eye can see early in the week.

      Sports Shorts
            Genna Opatut, a freshman at Emerson College in Boston, was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference's Rookie of the Week on consecutive weeks. The Freehold Borough High School grad scored the game-winning goal in Emerson's GNAC 1- 0 win over UMass, Boston, and had four goals for the week, the first time she was the Rookie of the Week.

      Soccer teams have mixed results
            While Freehold Borough girls were winning their third consecutive NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III title, the state playoffs were a mixed bag for the other qualifying teams from the Freehold Regional District. Manalapan and Colts Neck each won playoff games before falling in the Central Jersey Group IV quarterfinals.
