Sports Shorts Freehold Township's Eve Kinsella won two events for the Boston University women's swimming and diving team in the Terriers 148-93 victory over Massachusetts. Kinsella, a senior, won the 200 individual medley (2:07.41) and the 100 freestyle (52.82). In addition, she swam the anchor leg on the Terriers 400-medley relay team that turned in the fastest time of the day (3:32.80). She was the university's Student Athlete of the Week for her performances against Massachusetts. Kinsella, a graduate of The Peddie School, was Boston University's MVP for the 2007-08 season. She holds two individual school records in the 200 free and 200 IM. She's also been the member of three school record relay teams: 200- and 800- free and 400 medley. Last year, Kinsella won the American East Conference championship in the 200 IM and swam on the victorious 400-medley and 800- free relay teams. She was named the Most Outstanding Female Swimmer at the meet. Kinsella is enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences as an economics major with a minor in sociology. At Peddie, Kinsella was a three-year All-American. Joey Piccolo, 13, and his brother Nick Piccolo, 10, of Marlboro, won medals at recent ice hockey tournaments. Both are members of the Cougars. Joey played in the State Wards Hockey Tournament in Cincinnati, Ohio where he won the bronze medal as a member of Team New Jersey. This was the third time he competed for Team New Jersey and the first time he won a medal. New Jersey beat North Carolina, 5-2, in the Bronze Medal game. Joey had three goals and three assists. With the Cougars, Joey won the silver medal at the National finals played in the Pepsi Center in Buffalo, N.Y. Nick, who plays on the Cougars 10u team won silver medals with the team at the Jr. Olympics in Philadelphia and the 10-U division finals in Pittsburgh, Pa. At the Jr. Olympics, the Cougars played against teams from around the world. The Jersey Shore Stallions U-12 travel baseball team is looking for a few players to join their successful team. The Stallions will be going to Cooperstown Dreams Park, Cooperstown, N.Y., in August. Suburban Football League play, the Marlboro Youth Football third/fourth grade and sixth-grade teams scored victories on the gridiron. The third/fourth grade squad edged Morristown, 19-13, while the sixth-graders beat Morristown, 12-0. The fifth-grade team lost to Morristown, 28-7, and the seventh-graders lost 6-0 to Morristown. The eighth-grade team played Scotch Plains/Fanwood, and lost 41-12. The YMCA of Western Monmouth County will host the YMCA Fall Hoops Clinic at Manalapan High School on Nov. 6 and 7. The youth clinic includes fundamental development, drills and defensive breakdown, guest speakers, self improvement guide and more for boys and girls in grades two through eight. Dr. Josh Epstein of the Brace Place in Manalapan will be running in the New York City Marathon on Nov. 2. He is running as part of the NYRR Foundation Team for Kids. Through charitable donations, the team will be able to assist 50,000 kids in joining Running Partners, a youth development program that serves children who have little or no access to structured physical education. Dr. Epstein is committed to raising $12,000 to help inner-city children learn about good health and fitness habits. The goal is for these children to become physically fit, learn about proper diet and exercise, and the direct relationship of effort to achievement. In addition, they will participate in races and special events that will expose them to new experiences and motivate them to set goals for their adult lives. Monmouth University running back David Sinisi has been named Northeast Conference Offensive Player of the Week by conference officials after his impressive four touchdown effort against Central Connecticut State last Saturday. Sinisi scored four consecutive touchdowns to overcome an early deficit and help the Hawks past Central Connecticut State, 30- 20 on homecoming weekend. With his fourth touchdown, Sinisi scored his 300th point, tying former Wagner Seahawk Rick Sarille for the most points in NEC history. The Cedar Grove native ran the ball 29 times for 194 yards for an average of 6.7 yards per rush. The redshirt senior took possession of third place on the NEC's career rushing list. Sinisi has scored 17 touchdowns this season, which is tied for the most in the NCAA. His 1,295 yards and 161.8 yards per game both rank first in the NCAA, with three regular season games to play. The Hawks, winners of five straight contests, will battle the University of Albany for first place in the league on Nov. 1. Monmouth University senior Molly Passarella put the field hockey team up early, but they couldn't hold on as the Hawks dropped a close, double overtime 2-1 game to Siena on Sunday afternoon at Loudonville, N.Y. TheHawks put the pressure on Siena early when Passarella beat two defenders, sending in a deep shot past Saint's goalie Renee Clavette to put Monmouth up 1-0 just nine minutes into the first half. The Blue and White were relentless in the first half, putting up 17 shots with 10 corners in the half. The score remained the same until nine minutes into the second half when Siena answered with a finish by Kristin McGorty to tie the game, forcing overtime. The game was forced into a double overtime and ended four minutes into double overtime when the Saints' Caroline Hunnewell smacked in a corner rebound to end the game in favor of Siena. The Blue and White are now 3-14 on the season and 2-4 in the NEC as Siena moves to 1-14 on the season and 1-5 in the conference. Coach Carli Figlio's crew will return to action for the last NEC match of 2008, as they travel to Lawrenceville Oct. 31 for a 4 p.m. game with Rider. |
