      Doing away with tolls would carry benefits
            Your article regarding the proposed toll increase ("Turnpike Authority Approves Toll Hike," News Transcript, Oct. 15) was very informative. Tolls in New Jersey have been around for over 50 years, thus suggesting that they are necessary.

            This past week at Monmouth University, over 175 business leaders and local elected officials came together at a Call to Service Conference, one of the kickoff events in a large-scale effort aimed at inviting our state's citizens to participate beyond the ballot box and provide constructive leadership on the problems facing our municipalities, counties and state.

      Policies aside, some kids are always on the football field
            My family has been involved with Pop Warner (youth football) for four years. Throughout these years I have truly respected the organization, the coaches and all of the volunteers who make Pop Warner what it is today. Recently, events have occurred that have made me question the Pop Warner organization.

            Is the Marlboro dog run a wonderful addition to our community or an accident waiting to happen? The view of frolicking dogs along with happy owners and laughing children seems worthy of a postcard. Unfortunately, hidden in this picture are serious dangers that need to be addressed.

      More steps are needed to curb students' binge drinking
            Some college traditions are ageless, like eating pizza at midnight and pulling allnighters before a big test. But recent national reports about other "traditions" — guzzling cold beer with friends or getting so drunk you can barely find your dorm room — are being seriously examined for the longterm damage they cause to drinkers and nondrinkers alike.
