            It's been Freehold Borough against the world. That's the approach the Colonial football team has taken in 2008. Although Shore Conference Federal Division champions and a state playoff team in 2007, most in the Shore area were quick to dismiss Freehold Borough this year. Last season was considered more an aberration than the fact that the Colonials are that good.

            Aseven-year marathon journey across the country and Canada came to a conclusion in Washington, D.C., this summer. Starting in 2002, Ira and Debbie Shapiro and their sons Lane and Hayden set off on a journey of visiting all 30 Major League ballparks. After seven summers of vacations on the road, they made their final stop in Washington, D.C.

            It didn't take long for Freehold Township freshman Bianca Petcu to make a difference on the tennis court. Petcu delivered the decisive point for the Patriots in their 3-2 win over Marlboro in an early-season Shore Conference A North showdown on Sept. 17.

            The cross country season took its first big steps of the season on Saturday with the running of a number of invitationals. Monmouth Battlefield in Manalapan hosted the annual Shore Coaches Battle of Monmouth Class Meet. Marlboro's girls captured the Senior Division title by placing its three runners in the first eight.

            Craig Forys returned to the site of some of his finest high school races, Van Cortlandt Park (VCP) in the Bronx, NYC, with the University of Michigan men's cross country team. The last time Forys had been at VCP, he was a senior at Colts Neck High School and he won the Foot Locker Northeast Qualifier in a state record 15:15.2.

            With only three returning starters and a new coach to boot, this was expected to be a rebuilding year for Freehold Township's field hockey team. It has been anything but that.
