            Howell and Manalapan have been the dominant forces in the Shore Conference in recent seasons as well as the state. Their regular season and postseason meetings have produced riveting action and brilliant play. It seems every time they meet, something big is at stake.

      Soccer team is No. 3
            Mike Costa is well aware that national polls at this time of the season are meaningless. Still, he looks at Brookdale Community College's No. 3 ranking in the National Junior College Division men's soccer poll as a reward for some big wins early in the season.

      Sports Shorts
            The Battle of Monmouth Wanderers, a girls U14 team, repeated as the Lacey Soccer Club Memorial Soccerfest Tournament champions. The girls went 3-0 in the tournament and did not allow a single goal. They beat Alliance, 4-0, Lacey 2-0 and Beachwood, 2-0. The girls also went through the 2007 Lacey tourney undefeated and without permitting a goal.

      Big opening weekend for area football teams
            What a way to open the 2008 scholastic football season. Howell, Freehold Borough, Colts Neck and Freehold Township all opened with impressive wins over the weekend. Cory Davies' Rebels picked up where they left off in 2007 when they won the school's first-ever football state championship (Central Jersey Group IV) beating Brick Township on Saturday, 34-27.
