      Track record falls at Freehold in Sire Stakes trotting race
      Spam Spade does mile in 1:55.4
            Sire Stakes action produced a new track record at Freehold Raceway on Friday. Spam Spade lowered the track's 3- year-old trotting geldings to 1:55.4 in winning the $23,250 first division of the opening round of the New Jersey Sire Stakes (NJSS).

            Marlboro High School grad Sarah Mergenthaler participated in the Summer Olympics in Beijing as a member of the United States Sailing Team. She competed in the 470 Women Class with teammate Amanda Clark. Mergenthaler and Clark won the U.S. Olympic Trials. At the Olympics, the duo finished 12th. They were 11th at the 470 World Championships earlier this year.

      Forys ready to put summer training to test
      Ex-Cougar star ready for sophomore season at UM
            On the surface, it was a typical summer for Craig Forys. Work as a lifeguard at Bradley Beach during the day (with the occasional participation in lifeguard competitions) and, of course, running in the evening. Forys was back on his old stomping grounds this summer, running around the Manasquan River Reservoir or on the Allaire State Park trails.

      Hawks picked to finish second in NEC football
      Monmouth opens season on Aug. 30 at Rhode Island
            Northeast Conference football coaches voted for experience. Even though the Monmouth University football team was 4-6 overall last fall and 3-3 in the NEC, the conference coaches picked coach Kevin Callahan's squad to finish second behind Albany. The Hawks have returned nine starters on the offense and 10 on defense.

            The Monmouth University football team completed their first of two scrimmages for the 2008 preseason on Saturday, Aug. 16 at Kessler Field. The Hawks were split into the White (offense) and Blue (defense) squads, and alternated playing between the first, second, third and fourth teams.
