I could not believe my ears when I heard certain people call our governor courageous for his debt-restructuring plans. Is it courageous to threaten our children with closing state parks? Is it courageous to threaten New Jersey drivers with astronomical increases in tolls and gas taxes when families are struggling to survive? More ... As a citizen of Freehold for over 40 years, I must voice my shock at the experience my daughter had on July 10, 2008, while walking in Michael J. Tighe Park, which she has been doing for over four years with her dog. More ... A local newspaper featured photos last week of state Senate President Richard Codey and his staff, clad in green shirts and ball caps, cleaning refuse on the shoulders of Route 37 in Seaside Heights. This type of volunteer activity is to be commended. Sen. Codey appears to be a nice man. He comes across as likeable, quick, smart, and often funny. More ... The News Transcript seems to have become the whipping person for teachers and their union — letters to the editor and Managing Editor Mark Rosman's column of July 23 ("A Trip to Old Brazil"). So far as teachers' starting salaries being "too high" — too high in comparison to whom? A starting engineer, lawyer, etc. fresh out of school commands much more. More ... This one is a no-brainer. Students should not be allowed to carry cell phones during regular school hours. When I was in high school (Manalapan, class of 1982), there were no cell phones and we managed just fine. For all the reasons stated in your editorial ("Let School Officials Hear Opinions on Phone Plan," News Transcript, Aug. 6, 2008), cell phones are not needed. More ... |
