      RU football looking to maintain high level of play in '08

            PISCATAWAY — The goal in many Rutgers football observers' opinion is to get back to the level of play that the Scarlet Knights had in 2006, when the team finished with an 11-2 record, a Texas Bowl victory and a national ranking.

      Andrews wins FARC finale tune-up for XC season
            The Freehold Area Running Club's Summer Race (FARC) series concluded with a classic duel. Manalapan High School's Robbie Andrews nipped former Red Bank Regional star Rob Dennis by less than half a second on the line, in a thriller to capture the club's final 5K race of the summer series held at the Monmouth Battlefield in Manalapan.

            Former Monmouth University women's soccer standout Amy Hoyer, the 2007 Northeast Conference Player of the Year, was selected to participate in the WLeague Combine in September. Hoyer, who was named third-team All-Mid Atlantic Region by Soccer Buzz magazine, and thirdteamAll Mid Atlantic Region by the NSCAA, will compete at the W-League Combine Sept. 4-7 in Tampa, Fla.

      Manalapan 11-year-olds win Ripken state title
      Mid-Atlantic Region is next for youngsters
            Next stop, the Mid-Atlantic Regional. The Manalapan Cal Ripken 11-yearold All-Star team is enjoying an outstanding summer. They recently added the Cal Ripken Northern New Jersey State Championship to the Little League District title they had won earlier. It was the third consecutive District 19 crown for this team, having won their first as 9-year-olds.

      Plenty of locals turn out for Asbury Park 5K
            More than 1,000 people registered and over 900 of them crossed the finish line on Saturday at the Asbury Park 5K road race, according to race director Phil Hinck. As has been the case most of the summer, Noel Brock won with a time of 16:52 on the double-loop course that ends on the boardwalk.

      SC standouts combine to set a course record
      Ex-scholastic stars win River to Sea Relay
            What happens when you put the best female runners from the Shore Conference (SC) together on a team? Records. A team of who's who from the SC teamed up on Aug. 2 to set a course record at the 13th annual River to Sea Relay (R2C13). The seven-runner team covered the 92-mile trek in 9:37:34 to establish a Female Elapsed Time division record.

      Fraley first at nationals, Fobes is All-American
      At Junior National Wrestling Championships
            Colts Neck's Tyler Fraley demonstrated a lot of promise during the scholastic wrestling season. He won 28 matches as a freshman wrestling at 103 pounds. Even though he weighed 94 pounds soaking wet, his 28 wins were proof enough that he has a bright career in front of him.

      Colts Neck 9-10s win second straight District 19 pennant
            Colts Neck has quite a baseball team to shout about. It's 9-10-year-old All- Star team won the Little League District 19 championship this summer, making it the first Colts Neck team to win the tournament at that age group. The year before as 8-year-olds, they were the first Colts Neck Little League team to capture the District pennant in that age group.

            Andy Miller reached a milestone at Freehold Raceway on Friday when he scored a win in the second race on the card with Fancy Muffler. The win was the 6,000th of his career. Miller, who began driving in 1985, has scored 289 wins in 2008. The 39-year-old Miller had his best season in 2005 when he had 581 wins.

      Freehold Township Juniors made their case
      Mass. champions win Eastern Regional
            At the very least, the Freehold Township Little League's Junior League all-stars proved they belonged. Even though they didn't get the results they were looking for at last week's Junior League Eastern Regional, which was hosted by the Freehold Township Little League at its Tighe Park facilities, they went 2-2 reaching the final four.
