      The switch to wood bats has lowered scores
            It's softball as it used to be played. Gone are the monster home runs and big innings. They have been replaced by lowscoring games where every play is important. This summer, the Freehold Township Recreation Men's Modified and Arc Softball League has switched from aluminum bats to wooden bats, entering the aluminum vs. wood fray.

      Team beats Lincroft twice to win pennant
            They did it the hard way. The Freehold Township Little League National fell into the dreaded losers' bracket in the Little League Major Division (11-12-yearolds) District 19 Tournament, yet, had enough resolve and depth to win three straight games on consecutive days to claim the pennant.

      Ex-Rebel played for USA lacrosse
            The uniform colors were similar to high school: dark blue shorts and white top. When Howell's Anthony Bonjavanni first put them on, he thought back to his lacrosse days at Howell High School. Then he saw the letters on the front - USA- and it was no longer high school.

      Quality pitching wins it for Marlboro South
      Team wins L.L. District 19 championship
            Solid in all three facets of the game, Marlboro South used that quality to capture the Little League District 19 8-and-9-year-olds championship. Marlboro South went 5-0 in the tournament and trailed in just one game for just a half inning. Marlboro South defeated Freehold Township National, 12-4, in the final played July 2 at the Eatontown Little League facility.

      Sebor's grand slam lifts FT to championship
      Seniors win District 19
            Freehold Township had been down this road before and it had led to a dead end. They were up against a Middletown team that had tormented them in District 19 finals before - twice, as a matter of fact. After building 4-0 and 6-1 leads, Freehold Township had seen the veteran Middletown squad rally to tie them at 6-6 on July 13 at the Tinton Falls Little League Complex.
