      Candidates should address pressing issues
            Congratulations to the Republicans and Democrats in Freehold Township for deciding to run a "green" campaign. No offense, but I believe what voters want is for the campaign to be "clean" and the topics to be "green." How about a promise of no mud-slinging, no dirty laundry, no typical back room politics.

      It is time for teachers to be compensated based on merit
            It was so depressing to read (in the July 9 News Transcript article "School Board Announces Contract With Teachers") that the system still relies on a mere two irrelevant factors - seniority and college degrees - to determine teachers' pay. (I'm thankful that continuing education seminars that don't lead to an advanced degree don't nick taxpayers).

            I attended the June 24 meeting in Marlboro to contribute my ideas to the township's Smart Growth Plan and was given a copy of a statement of objectives from Marlboro's most recent master plan.

            Over the past week we have heard many predictions of destruction and doom with calls for resistance from towns vowing to fight the recent legislative action to ban Regional Contribution Agreements (RCA) - the loophole in our fair housing law that for two decades allowed New Jersey's wealthiest towns to pay poor communities to take their affordable housing.

            Freehold Borough is among a handful of United States towns engaging in an important social experiment which may help set the tone for a new social revolution throughout America. Let's call it returning to the simpler and richer times our parents and grandparents enjoyed, not so long ago, in small town America.
