      It's championship time in Little League baseball
            It's a very busy time for Little League baseball. Little Leagues throughout the area are playing and hosting District 19 tournaments - all with the hopes of winning championships and moving on, potentially, to World Series appearances. Hope springs eternal for all the youngsters participating in the tournaments.

      Comfort, Plujimakers top girls lacrosse team
            Girls lacrosse came of age this spring. Freehold Township breezed through the Shore Conference A North Division with a perfect 10-0 mark. With a second straight division title and a 14-2 overall record, the Patriots took their place among the Shore's elite, a position they plan to maintain.

            Rutgers redshirt sophomore Catherine Whetstone was one of 21 student-athletes recognized by the Big East Conference as winners of the 2007-08 Scholar Athlete Sport Excellence Award, which recognizes academic and athletic achievement as well as community service.

      Freehold Twp. 13s win extra-inning thriller
            From its very first win in the District 19 tournament, Freehold Township Little League's 13-year-old team had what it takes to win the close games. It took a great relay from center fielder Dan Kvederas to catcher Steve Schulman that nailed the potential tying run in the last inning to preserve a 4-3 win over Middletown.

      Howell's Marlborough heads boys lacrosse
            Howell High School kept boys lacrosse on the map this spring. Derek Reichenbacker's Rebels ranked in the Shore's top 10 all season and made a run at the A North Division title (finishing one game behind Wall). Led by midfielder Kyle Marlborough, the Rebels were 11-6 and qualified for the state playoffs.

            When you think of football players overcoming adversity, the first thing that comes to mind is a serious injury or illness. That is mere child's play for Tom Sozzi. The recent Manalapan High School graduate had to face challenges far greater than that in his young life.
