      Subdued triumphs for Raceway Park winners
            Winners at the Lucas Oil SuperNationals at Raceway Park were in no mood to celebrate their victories on Sunday. The death of one of its own, National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Funny Car driver Scott Kalitta in a qualifying round accident on Saturday, cast a gloom over the event.

            There may not seem to be a big difference between 11-13 and 12-12. However, for the Marlboro High School baseball team, it was huge. "That made all the difference," said Mustang head coach Paul Sessa, whose team won its last two games to reach .500.

      Linnell wins steeplechase honors at nationals
      Marlboro's Unachukwu breaks District 400 record
            Allison Linnell capped her extraordinary track and field season by winning All-American honors at the Nike Outdoor Nationals (NON). Linnell, fresh off her NJSIAA MOC title at 1,600 meters, finished fifth in the 2,000- meter steeplechase in Greensboro, N.C., on Saturday. The Cougar senior closed strongly, nabbing fifth place on the line in 6:56.

      Sports Shorts
            Julian Rosenberg, 11, of Marlboro, won the recent Boys 14 Singles at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) tournament, eastern-southern N.Y. section. The tournament was held at Copper Springs Beach Tennis in Gillette. Rosenberg, who attends Marlboro Memorial Middle School, dropped only one set in his five matches.

      Linnell, Unachukwu were tops on the track
            Allison Linnell and Ada Unachukwu kept the Freehold Regional District front and center on the girls track and field scene state-wise. Linnell, the Colts Neck senior, captured the state 1,600-meter championship, while Unachukwu, a junior at Marlboro, impressed with her all-around talents.

      Racecar driver has fatal crash at local drag strip
            Funny Car driver Scott Kalitta, 46, died Saturday in a high-speed racing accident at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. The accident occurred during qualifying for the following day's Lucas Oil NHRA (NationalHot Rod Association) SuperNationals.

      SBOA donating Dan Patch book
            Can Dan Patch do it again? The Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association (SBOA) of New Jersey certainly hopes so. Dan Patch was a legendary pacer in the early years of the 20th century. He was as big, if not bigger, than any sports star in the country from 1900 to his death in 1916. Tens of thousands would come to see him race.

      Feehan, Matthews head volleyball team
            Determined to validate its 2007 championship, Howell High School's boys volleyball team did just that. Coach Jim Huebner's Rebels clinched their second straight public schools Shore Conference A North Division championship in the final match of the season when they topped Colts Neck, 2-0. That left the Rebels at 8-2 and the Cougars, coached by Glenn Jansen, 7-3.
