      Braves fall in MCT slugfest to St. Rose
      Manalapan drops final, 14-9
            A7-0 lead in football is nothing. In baseball, it's a pretty big mountain to climb. Yet, it didn't stop the Manalapan Braves from turning the June 2 Monmouth County Tournament final into a classic. Top-seed St. Rose won the game played at Monmouth Regional High School, 14-9, but not before both teams showed tremendous character.

      It may take time to spot fluke, stripers

            So far, it's a slow pick for fluke and stripers, with water temperatures ranging between 58 and 65 degrees as the days quickly warmed up. Both fluke and bass boats worked up and down along Sandy Hook this week, covering miles of ground with few keepers to speak of in both categories.

      Sports Shorts
            Courtney Hortsman and Samantha Hering, Level 9 gymnasts from the Monmouth Gymnastics Academy, competed in the 2008 Nationals held in Ohio. Hortsman scored a 36.175 in the allaround competition. She finished fifth on the vault (9.275) and the floor exercise (9.45). Hering scored 8.6with her floor routine, 7.95 of the uneven bars and 8,875 on the floor.

            Catherine Kim went into the Freehold Regional District Girls Golf Tournament anticipating the worse. "The day before I had played 18 holes in the Shore Conference and it was 90 degrees," she pointed out. "It drained me. "I thought I'd do terribly [at the District tournament]," she added. "I wasn't expecting to play well.
