            Freehold Township lost one of its most prominent caretakers when Nancy Dubois Wood died May 28. Wood, 86, was a lifelong resident of Freehold, a graduate of its public schools and a graduate of Freehold High School. It was my honor to get to know Wood when I served with her on the Freehold Township Historic Preservation Commission in the mid-1990s.

            Back in the days when I was a court reporter, I covered the trial of a Colombian drug importer who had made a fortune bringing South American cocaine to this country and selling it to more-than-willing clients. The feds busted him, not after a long undercover investigation, but after an angry ex-employee tipped them off that he had a kilo of cocaine in his apartment.

            While listening to my car radio, I caught the chorus of John Mayer's new song, "Say," which goes, "Say what you mean to say," over and over and over. I flipped to another station, thinking, what's up with this song, John? The next day I heard the song again - in its entirety- and realized how true the lyrics were.
