      Cougar girls top Colts Neck Relays
      Meet records tumble
            Displaying their full range of talent, host Colts Neck's girls outscored everyone at the ColtsNeck Relays on Saturday. Although there was no official team scoring for the meet, the Cougars did score more points than anyone else (86). Toms River North was next (78.5) with Jackson, third (70).

      Pats knock off CBA in track dual meet
            It's a tribute to the progressmade against Christian Brothers Academy's dominance in recent years that Freehold Township's 79-61 dual-meet victory onApril 8, while big, was not shocking. The Pats had helped to shatter the CBA myth on the hardwood culminating in their three-game sweep in 2006-07. Colts Neck joined the club the last two years.

            Marlboro's new baseball coach Paul Sessawelcomes the fact that he has a very large senior class as his foundation. "Why not take advantage of it, they are good players," he pointed out. "We have a lot of senior leadership.

      Sports Shorts
            Brad Brach became Monmouth University's all-time career strikeout leader when the senior right-hander went 7.1 innings in Monmouth's 10-3 win over NJIT. In fanning eight batters, he ran his career strikeout total to 226. Brach, a graduate of Freehold Township High School, is 2-1 on the season with 28 strikeouts in 31 innings. He's pitching to a 3.19 earned-run average.

      Colonials aiming for state playoffs
            Jon Block, returning for a second stint as the Freehold Borough baseball coach, has raised the bar for his 2008 Colonials. Although they are coming off a 7-11 season, Block's goals are to "contend for the division (B North) and qualify for the state tournament.

      Rebels looking for better start in '08
      4-2 start has team in A North hunt
            As Howell looks to move up in the ranks of A North this spring, coach Bill Gallacher knows he can put a quality pitcher on the mound each game. That could be the difference between the team getting off slowly as it did in '07, or a good start like it has this year going 4-2 in its first six games, including Friday's 9- 2 win over Christian Brothers Academy.
