      Cougars, Crudup, Mayrose top All-District Team
            The 2007-08 girls basketball campaign will be remembered as that championship season. Led by John Truhan's Colts Neck Cougars, four area teams captured titles this winter. The Cougars, led by guards Brooke Hampton and Lauren Clarke, were the Shore'sNo 1 teamand ranked as high asNo. 5 in the state. Starting in January, the Cougars put together an historic winning streak.

      Danella, Miller, Hampton top coaches All-Shore Team
            Shore Conference Tournament champion Colts Neck put two players on the Shore Basketball Coaches All- Shore girls basketball team. Guards Brooke Hampton and Lauren Clarke, who led the Cougars to a 28-2 season that included the SCT, Shore Conference A North Division and WOBM Tournament championships, head the First Team selections.

      Kates, Spinella, Garcia head boys District team
            Despite a huge turnover due to graduation, Freehold Township maintained its grip on Shore Conference A North Division basketball. This was the year to catch Brian Golub's Patriots, after they lost all five starters from a year ago. Yet the Patriots were able to stay ahead of the rest thanks to their ability to make plays at the end of the game.

      St. Gabriel boys finish with perfect record
            Perfection. The St. Gabriel's boys basketball team experienced it this winter in winning the Northern Monmouth Parochial Championship. The Marlboro school went 24-0. St. Gabriel's capped its perfect season with a signature 52-19 win in the championship game final against St. Clement Red. The final was played at Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft.

            The Shore's best tandem and best player head the Shore Basketball CoachesAll-Shore First Team. Mitchell Kates and Steve Spinella are the tandemwhomade ColtsNeck one of the best teams in the conference. Kates, a point guard, led the conference in assists (7.4) and steals (4.9), and averaged 16 points a game.

            Former Monmouth University linebacker Mike Castellano recently signed a one-year contract with the Arkansas franchise of the upstart All- American Football League that will begin play in the spring of 2009. "I am really excited about the chance to keep playing football," Castellano said.

      Brookdale women fifth at nationals
      Fabrizio named to All-Tourney Team
            Brookdale Community College's women's basketball team took fifth place in the National Junior College Athletic Association's Division III Championships. Forward Sasha Fabrizio, who made the All-Tournament Team, led the Blues, the 2008 Garden State Athletic Conference and Region XIX champions. The sophomore averaged a double-double for the Blues with 10.

      Hawks' Keller, Skowronski earn All-East recognition
            Monmouth University's Chris Keller and Ed Skowronski capped stellar indoor seasons by winning All-East honors at the IC4A Championships. Skowronski (Raritan) and Keller (Matawan) finished fifth and seventh in the weight throw to garner All-East recognition. Skowronski reached 60-11½ and Keller, 60-6.

            Tom Wendel had an exciting afternoon. He and fellowFreeholdAreaRunning Club (FARC) member Bob Hyer spent a recent Sunday counting parking spaces at Michael Tighe Park in Freehold Township. It was all part of the meticulous preparation that goes into running a road race.
