      Langel, Turner, Fobes, Frankel top mat team
            Hchampionship drought at Howell High School, Joey Langel easily provided the biggest news of the season. It was also a wrestling campaign that again belonged to John Gagliano's Rebels. In addition to Langel's triumph, teammate Harry Turner (heavyweight) won 42 straight matches and advanced to the state final in Atlantic City.

      Cougar runners shine at national track meet
      10 earn All-American status
            It was another productive weekend at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships (NISC) for Colts Neck's runners. By now, the Cougars have made the extraordinary ordinary as its runners left the NSIC, held at the New Balance Track and Field Center in New York City, decorated as All-American 10 times.

      Sports Shorts
            Boston College's Maggie Taverna was named Second Team Hockey EastAll- Star. It was the third time that the defenseman from Howell has been named Hockey East All-Star. This season she scored 12 points on two goals and 10 assists. She was the leading blue-line scorer for the Golden Eagles in 2007-08.

      SJV girls won school's 12th state title
            When you're of the pedigree of St. John Vianney girls basketball, you don't get to play the underdog very often. However, the 2007-08 season afforded the Lancers just that, and the state's most successful program made the most of it.

      Howell, FT bowlers top All-District Team
            Bowling should no longer be viewed as a minor sports activity, if it still is, after what the Howell High School and Freehold Township bowling teams accomplished this winter. These athletes deserve the same accolades as any one else for the championships they collected in '08.

      Owners and captains facing a tough summer
            Iguess I can get some cod reports from Montauk or even some bass reports from the surf but there is not much to report. Water temps are just not warm enough.
