Manalapan tree-recycling effort had good participation in first year

On behalf of the Manalapan Environmental Commission, we want to thank all those who made Mulchfest '08 such a success by bringing their Christmas trees to the Department of Public Works for mulching. Your efforts saved 150 trees from being landfilled and also saved the town a few bucks in dumping fees. We now have a nice pile of mulch to invigorate our parks and recreation areas.

Next year we hope to get the word out earlier and significantly increase participation.

Thanks also go to Alan Spector and the folks at DPW who did the mulching, and the Township Committee, Township Administrator Tara Lovrich and the Administration Department for quickly making the decisions and getting the word out.

Everybody needs to be vigilant and consider slight changes in their normal ways of doing things (like not simply throwing out your trees) in order to help the environment. Little changes add up.

The Environmental Commission's new motto is "You Make a Difference!" Please keep that in mind in all that you do.

      Herb Lazar

      Chairman Environmental Commission
