      Freehold Borough boys have qualified for postseason play
            Freehold Borough High School's prospects for a winning season did not look all that bright back in December. The Colonials were coming off a 6-17 season and relying on underclassmen to turn things around. Coach Ben DiBiase had just one senior in the rotation. But he knew something no one else knew: the amount of work his players had put into becoming better.

            It was a mixed bag for the Freehold Borough girls basketball teamlast week. The Colonials won the Shore Conference B North Division championship when they beat Monmouth Regional, 62- 53, Jan. 28, with Shannon Mayrose becoming the latest 1,000-point career scorer, and Matawan on Thursday.

      Victory over Howell clinches no worse than championship tie
            Gaining momentum with every swim meet, the Marlboro High School boys swimming team capped it off with a championship. Coach Jennifer Maloney's Mustangs clinched no worse than a tie for the Shore ConferenceANorth Division public school championship by edging Howell, 88-82, on Jan. 24 at the YMCA of Western Monmouth County, Freehold Township.

            The good news for the Colts Neck wrestling teamwas its inclusion in the Shore Conference Tournament (SCT) for the first time in the program's history. ""It's [SCT] been a goal since I took over," said Cougar head coach Bob Seidel, who was a scholastic wrestling star at Wall High School.

      Plenty of fish in the sea for winter anglers
            Rough weather this week stopped some but not all. Offshore fishing continues to be productive for the crew of the Jamaica II. Sea bass, porgies, ling, pollock, cod and even a few whiting have been making an appearance.Anglers continued to have fun with big numbers of jumbo porgies and sea bass.
