      Scholarships available to conservation majors
            Freehold Soil Conservation District will award three $2,000 scholarships to college students majoring in a conservation related field. The Neal Munch and Mac Clark Scholarships have been awarded for 29 consecutive years honoring their contribution and service to the field of conservation.

      Bowling registration being accepted
            MANALAPAN - The Manalapan Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registration for its youth bowling and adult-child bowling programs. Both programs will be held at Brunswick Country Lanes, Route 33, Manalapan. The youth bowling program is open to Manalapan residents between the ages of 5 and 14. The program will meet weekly on Saturdays at 9 a.m. beginning Feb.

      Italian-American group to host Mardi Gras Feb. 3
            The Italian American Association of Monmouth County will celebrate "Carnevale," an Italian Mardi Gras held before Fat Tuesday, 12:30-5 p.m. Feb. 3 at Sterling Gardens, Route 79, Matawan. The event will feature various foods, a show with actors in masks and costume, auction table and a 50/50 raffle.Attendees are welcome to come in costume.

      Student places 2nd in poster contest
            A local student is among the winners of the New Jersey Radon Poster Contest. Michael Boldt, a seventh grade student at Howell Middle School South, was awarded second place for the poster he submitted. The winning posters illustrate the dangers of radon from indoor air.

      Acoustic guitars sought for Ugandan children
            Adrive for acoustic guitars for the children at Mbiriizi Primary School, Uganda, has been launched by the nonprofit Sylvia's Children, Holmdel. The nonprofit's founder, Sylvia Allen, visited the school in 2007 with her children, Tony and Michele, and other volunteers. Tony taught the children with music lessons.

      Register for Manalapan Pee-Wee Arts and Crafts
            The Manalapan Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registration for the spring Pee-Wee Arts and Crafts program. Registrants must be 3 to 10 years of age at the start of the program and residents of Manalapan. The fee per child per program is $45.

      Manalapan goes red for healthy hearts Feb. 1
            Manalapan Township employees will be wearing red Feb. 1 in honor of the fifth annual American Heart Association National Wear Red Day for Women. The goal of the event is to focus attention on the number one killer of American men and women - cardiovascular disease.
