            Freehold Borough and Marlboro were the aces on the tennis courts in 2007. Jon Block's Colonials advanced to the ShoreConference Tournament semifinals for the first time in school history as theymade their case for inclusion among the Shore's best. Along the way to the Final Four, the Colonials beat defending champion Manasquan and Marlboro.

      Andrews sets 1K record at NYC Armory meet
            If Robby Andrews had any lingering doubts of giving up basketball, it took about two-and-a-half minutes to remove them. That's how long it took the Manalapan High School junior to set a meet record in winning the 1,000-meter run at the 54th Bishop Loughlin Games at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the New York City Armory on Dec. 15.

      Traditional state power has a 2-2 record
            With a starting lineup that usually includes two freshmen and five freshmen on the varsity roster, the St. John Vianney High School girls basketball teamis nonetheless off to a 2-2 start. The Lady Lancers opened the campaign with a victory over Rumson-Fair Haven and also scored a triumph over Manasquan.

            The Marlboro boys U11 fall travel basketball team will be sorry to see 2007 go by. The boys were a perfect 28-0 during the year, winning the Mid-Monmouth Youth League title for the second straight year as well as the Marlboro Basketball Shootout and West Long Branch Thanksgiving Tournament.

      O'Flaherty, Weitz win FARC Toys for Tots at Tighe Park
            The Freehold Area Running Club (FARC) displayed its holiday spirit by taking part in the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots Foundation drive. Runners and racewalkers who participated in the club's 5K race held in Michael Tighe Park, Freehold Township, in December, brought unwrapped toys to the FARC's Toys for Tots race as part of their registration fee.
